A Big Crowd
Over 200 people crowded into Junior's Last Laugh on State St. in Erie for the second annual Corporate Spelling Bee sponsored jointly by Books for Kids and WQLN education.
A Gala Night With Scott Wludyga again at the microphone as M.C., Hard Core, Hard Bop warming up the crowd, judges Mary Jane Keonig and Stephanie Domitrovich giving the thumbs up or thumbs down, and 16 teams competing vigorously for top prize, the evening was a great success. In addition to the Bee, there were silent and "Chinese" auctions for goody baskets put together by board member Donna Gloekler. Altogether it was a wonderful evening, with Debbie Richardson of Junior's Last Laugh playing the perfect hostess and providing tasty hor d'oeuvres, Doug's Punchline Bar serving up the drinks, and Junior's kitchen serving meals and snacks to the hungry multitudes. Special thanks go to the Bee organizing committee members Traci Teudhope, Dean Baldwin, Ron Simonetti, Donna Glockler, and Mary Jane Koenig. |

Baldwin Speaks to Kiwanis
President Bean Baldwin addressed the breakfast meeting of the Millcreek Kiwanis Club on April 9.
As always, he explained the history and mission of Books for Kids, stressed the need for needy children in Erie to receive our free books, and displayed samples of the books we give away. Thanks to Kiwanis' President Marie Hanes for the warm welcome and support. If your club, business, service organization, church, or group would like to hear about Books for Kids, contact Bean Baldwin at 898-6214 or at dxb11@psu.edu.
Clean Up Day at Headquarters
Like teenagers who haven't cleaned their rooms in weeks, Books for Kids board members gathered Saturday, April 12 to organize our book stocks, take inventory, and generally clean up our store room at Bethany Outreach Center on East 10th St.
Thanks to board member Jane Levin, her son Charlie, and Charlie's friend Michael Sundberg, plus board members Dean Baldwin, Juan Fernandez, and Florence Smith for their hard work. Our store room and distribution center is now presentable to our guests and more organized for ourselves. Thanks to All Our New and Renewing Members

follow this practice, but we believe many other employers do as well.
Check at work to determine whether your employer will match your contribution to Books for Kids. Every dollar helps promote literacy and life-long learning among the children and youth of Erie County. Want to Help?
Like other non-profits, we are always looking for folks willing to lend a hand.
At the moment, we are without a board member able to take care of public relations and publicity. As a result, we miss some opportunities to publicize our work and communicate our message to those who haven't yet heard of us. If any of our readers is able and willing to join our board and help with public relations, we would be more than happy to consider candidates. Anyone interested may learn more and volunteer by calling Dean Baldwin at 898-6214 or any board member. We Change Lives
Giving a child a book may seem a simple act, but those who receive our books tell us that they make a real difference.
Literacy is a life-long gift, and all who support Books for Kids can feel good about the fact that our books do change lives. |
