Thanks to the persistent efforts of GE employees and retirees, Books for Kids has been reinstated as a qualified recipient of matching funds from General Electric's "More Gifts, More Givers" program. Donations from GE employees and retirees to Books for Kids totaled $1,510, which GE matched dollar for dollar, brihging the total to $3,020! Needles to say, we are grateful to everyone who contributed to this succesful effort, especially to Don Proctor for steering us successfully through the reapplication process and also for helping to recruit donors. Our thanks are also extended to all those who made quailfying donations to Books for Kids and who contacted GE to have their gifts matched. Although they are acknowledged elsewhere, we want to thank them once again for their generosity. They are Paul Baker, Ronald Cocke, Clarence Cunningham, Arthur DeLano, Steve Drabant, Robert Frenzel, Robert Hammers, The Mirian Hasslacher Memorial Fund, Rose Marie Jarmolowicz, Jan Nagle, Joe Podolsky, Edward Priebe, Don Proctor, Glenn Vest, and Martin Wallace. |
How To Contribute
If you are a current GE employee, or if you are a GE retiree or the widow or widower of a former GE employee, your gift to Books for Kids may be matched by GE.
To qualify, donate $25 or more to Books for Kids. Then call GE at 1-800-305-0669 or go on line at www.gefoundation.org and click on the "Matching Gifts" button. In either case, you will have to provide the employee's Social Security number and the Zip Code of Books for Kids (16508). Your gift will then be registered for matching purposes. Books for Kids,
Hooked on Books
Books for Kids and Hooked on Books collaborated on two events featuring the Laura Ingalls Wilder
Little House on the Prairie
series.
Promote Little House Events Impetus for the event was the new ABC-TV series that ran on Saturdays during April at 8:00 p.m. This series, unlike the one that aired years ago, was faithful to the events in the books. The first was at Emerson-Gridley School, where twenty Hooked on Books volunteers have been reading to students there in the very successful after school CHAMPS program. Books for Kids gave an entire set of Little House books to each child in the after school program. The second event took place at the Heighborhood Art House, where Hooked on Books readers serve as "reading pals" to children who come there after school for art and music lessons, help with homework, and other activities. Again, Books for Kids gave each participating child a full set of Little House books.
Hooked on Books Needs Volunteers
Hooked on Books needs "reading pals" for its summer reading program at the Neighborhood Art House (10th & Holland Sts).
You may read to the age group of your choice during any week beginning June 20th. |
Orientation will be given at noon on June 9 for new readers at the Art House.
For further information or to volunteer, call
Dolores Sarafinski
at 871-7422.
